If you’re planning a Barcelona getaway, you’re probably looking for accommodation. With the huge haul of hostels, hotels and apartments on offer, you might be wondering what actually lives up to the hype. In my quest to compile the best hotels in Barcelona, I came across Hotel Roger de Lluria in the city centre.

Barcelona is brimming with a world of whimsical finds, from the show-stopping Sagrada Familia to picturesque Park Guell. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned traveller, figuring out the best area to stay in Catalonia’s capital can pose quite a challenge.

Stay in among the sprawling streets in El Born, feel the fresh ocean breeze in the Barceloneta or keep it cosy in the colourful streets of Gracia. No matter your choice, there’s something here for you; luxury lovers, frugal backpackers and budget travellers alike. I set out on a quest to find the best hotels in Barcelona, Spain.

As a frequent flyer, I know the importance of staying somewhere centrally located. And I learnt that the hard way. There’s nothing worse than arriving in a new location and navigating the streets like a little lost lamb.

That’s why, more often than not, I choose to stay in the city centre. Don’t get me wrong, I love venturing off the beaten track, like when I stayed at this palace in Morocco or in this unique hotel in Lake Como.

Barcelona is home to a bounty of breathtaking experiences, from the eerie Gothic Quarter to the mouth-watering culinary scene. Whether you want to give your credit card a workout at the best vintage shops or enjoy a short-and-sweet 3-day itinerary, staying in the city centre serves as a great base.

There are endless hotels in Barcelona, but not many compare to Hotel Roger de Lluria. Boasting breezy balconies, sumptuous design, bubbling jacuzzis and a delectable breakfast buffet, this high-end hotel exceeded all of my expectations. So, let’s get into it. Here’s the full rundown of my experience at one of the top boutique hotels in Barcelona. Vamanos!

My Experience at Hotel Roger de Lluria

Let’s put transparency first. As always. I love Barcelona, that’s certainly no secret. I love the cuisine, culture and colours. Heck, I even love the crazy characters that you find in El Raval. But if there’s one thing I dislike in this city, it’s the taunting target on tourism.

Lots of people come to Barcelona and expect that they can just ‘do’ it in a couple of days. But that’s not the truth. You could live in this city for more than five years and still not see every single corner, every single spark.

In recent years, I’ve felt an enormous weight on my shoulders. I love travelling, but I don’t like following the mindless mainstream. I believe in creating heartfelt connections with locals and discovering the side that’s less known.

Whether that may be in big cities or rural towns. Recently, I set out on a quest to uncover Barcelona’s most authentic finds, from local shops and family-run businesses to Catalan-owned culinary experiences.

I’ve been piecing together the most Unique Things to do in Barcelona. And I thought I’d take it one step further. So, I delved deep into some research and discovered the diversity of hotels in Barcelona, Spain.

Among the bounty of boutique, backpacker and luxury finds, there were a small few that stood out. Having friends who have visited the city many times, I have a rough idea of what most people are looking for.

Most people coming here are looking for Barcelona hotels near the cruise port, the train station or the city centre.

After scrolling the seamlessly never-ending web, I found one of the most affordable luxury hotels in Barcelona. Hotel Roger de Lluria’s image was striking, yet softly subtle. From the curtain-draped windows to the elegant interior, I was immediately taken aback.

So, I reached out to Enric, the hotel’s director.

A few weeks later, I arrived with a wide smile on my face. As I took the electronic elevator up to the room, I sensed a fusion of contemporary meets modern.

There are many hotels in Barcelona city centre, but many are situated on one side of the coin. Barcelona hotels are usually either completely contemporary or overly outdated. Here at Hotel Roger de Lluria, I found a balance between that fine line.

Hemmed in by history, hearty cuisine and a haul of unique finds, I thoroughly enjoyed the fascinating fusion of new meets old. Taken aback by a collection of colours and dazzling details, I was almost immediately drawn to the grandiose windows.

Most boutique hotels in Barcelona boast luxury finishes, but not all of them have the best views. I opened the windows, stepped out onto the balcony and let the breeze brush past my skin. I peered at the buzzing roads down below and observed as hurried travellers traversed the streets. As I sat in a moment of stillness, silence and solitude, I felt a wave of gratitude sweep through me.

This historic Barcelona hotel had ushered in an immense feeling deep within me. It almost felt as if I had stumbled upon an oasis in the bustling city. I took a step back inside, looked around the room and decided it was time to take a bath. Sure, there are a lot of Barcelona hotels with balconies, but not all of them have bathtubs. So when I sunk down into the soaking hot water, I knew that I had hit the jackpot.

I spent a few hours reading, writing and making a bubble moustache with the bubbles from the bath. Because a little bit of play is important, right? After a big day of activities, I felt grateful to have that time of peace and quiet. As soon as my head hit the pillow, my heart pounded against my chest and my body began to sink into a state of relaxation.

After a night’s slumber, I trotted down to the breakfast buffet. Packed with freshly shaved ham, delectable tortilla and Spanish delicacies, I couldn’t help but over-indulge. I tried everything from the crispy croissants and chocolate-coated doughnuts to the omelettes and finger-sized sandwiches. I can honestly say that out of everywhere I’ve stayed in Spain, this was hands-down the best breakfast spread.

On a food-related note, many of the best Barcelona hotels offer a breakfast buffet. But not all of them do it like Hotel Roger de Lluria.

If you’re a foodie or someone who’s looking for an authentic taste of Spanish cuisine, this is highly recommendable.

After exploring the property, conversating with the staff and soaking up the ambience, I came to one conclusion. If you’re looking for 5-star Barcelona hotels, but you don’t want to pay the high price tag, this hot spot is for you.

You can choose to upgrade the rooms with jacuzzis, balconies, or whatever’s fit for your taste.

Even if you’re searching for cheap hotels in Barcelona, I think that this is an absolute steal. You can lock lips with delectable cuisine and stay in luxurious facilities for an affordable, pocket-friendly price.
